As a technology company, we've always believed in the power of collaboration to foster innovation and drive positive change. One of these cooperation is the EM-TECH project, funded by the European Commission, aims to advance electric motor technology for efficient and sustainable e-mobility. Started back in Jan 1st, 2023, it will last for 36 months and bring together a consortium of 10 partners from 5 countries, led by AVL List GmbH. EM-TECH is part of the 2Zero partnership under Horizon Europe, which focuses on zero emission road transport in Europe.
The EM-TECH project outlines 5 objectives
Develop efficient radial flux in-wheel motor (IWM) and on-board axial flux motor (AFM) for various vehicles.
Enhance power density and efficiency while reducing implementation costs.
Improve performance and reduce the life cycle impact of EM-TECH radial and axial flux machines.
Implement circularity solutions for in-wheel and on-board motor technologies.
Optimize electric machine performance and circularity through digital twinning.
As a result, EM-TECH will create affordable, highly efficient electric motors, as well as advance research methodologies and smart control systems, contributing to sustainability and reducing emissions. Let’s bring certainty in numbers: electric motors showing 20 to 25% less energy loss; electricity cost reduction of 5-6€/kW and lower; more than 20% decrease in rare magnets use and about 60% in total rare earth content. EM-TECH has the support of car makers like AUDI AG and Changan UK R&D Centre Ltd. and Tier 1 supplier PUNCH Torino S.p.A., which will strengthen the exploitation strategy.
