Vaionic has successfully integrated and tested the e-drive system, based on axial-flux ironless e-motor, in a test vehicle.
Extensive testing of the ‘DemoCar’ vehicle has been completed successfully, with the e-drive meeting all predefined performance and operational requirements.
Berlin, August 2025 - Vaionic Technologies, the Berlin-based technology startup specialising in design, prototyping and testing of electric drive systems, has successfully demonstrated its innovative e-drive concept in a test vehicle.
The company has integrated its fully in-house developed Generation 1 (Gen1) electric drive into a Volkswagen e-Crafter, making it a rolling proof-of-concept for Vaionic’s pioneering ironless axial flux motor technology. Vaionic deliberately chose the VW e-Crafter for this project to highlight the versatility of its e-drive system. Being the Light Commercial Vehicle, the e-Crafter serves as an ideal platform to showcase how the modular iPSM motor can be adapted to a wide range of vehicle classes and use cases - from compact urban mobility to heavy-duty transport applications.
A key feature of the test vehicle is the use of multiple stator modules within the motor, enabling Vaionic to validate the modularity concept that is central to its design philosophy.
Extensive testing of the “DemoCar” has been completed successfully, with the e-drive meeting all predefined performance and operational requirements under weather conditions ranging from sub-zero to mid-summer temperatures. Along with proving the modularity concept and validation of the simulation results, following aspects had to be considered: power and torque requirements, packaging compatibility, NVH and EMC, as well as drivability.
“The successful operation of our DemoCar marks a significant milestone for Vaionic,” said Kristian Ahlborn, CEO and Co-Founder of Vaionic Technologies. “It proves not only the feasibility of our ironless axial flux concept but also validates our simulation tools, which are critical for efficient development and scaling of next-generation e-drives.”
The company’s innovative approach targets higher efficiency, reduced material usage, lower production costs, and recyclability paving the way for more sustainable and affordable electric mobility solutions.
